Have you ever looked up from your jam-packed calendar and thought, “How did I get here?”
You’ve been busy. You’ve been grinding. You’ve been putting out fires left and right.

But somehow… you’re still in the same place.

If that feels familiar, you’re not alone.

As HR professionals and high-achievers, we’re often the go-to problem-solvers. We’re trained to react, to pivot, to keep things moving.

But here’s the truth:
You can’t lead effectively when you’re stuck in reactive mode.

You can’t steer a parked car.
And you can’t move forward while standing still.

In today’s episode, we’re going to talk about how to break out of autopilot – how to stop running from task to task and instead lead your life and career with intention.

I’ll share a personal story from my childhood that taught me the power of organization and intentionality in the face of constant change.

And I’ll walk you through a simple framework to help you shift from reacting to strategically creating the life and career you want.

Let’s dive in.

HR on Autopilot: Why Strategic Leaders Get Stuck

Even the most competent HR leaders fall into reactive patterns.

Why? Because you’re constantly responding to the needs of others – putting out fires, navigating shifting priorities, managing crises, supporting the business and the people inside it.

It’s easy to confuse busyness with progress.

And from the outside, you may look like you’re thriving. You’re known, respected, sought after.

But inside? You feel foggy. Disconnected. Like something’s missing.

This is what I call “strategic drift.”

And the way out is not to work harder – but to reset your focus and realign your energy.

Childhood Lessons on Intentional Living

Growing up, my dad was a minister – which meant we moved… a lot.

Every couple of years, we were packing up and settling into a new community, a new school, a new church family.

As a child, this rhythm of change could’ve felt chaotic, but my mom made it feel surprisingly smooth – and I didn’t realize until much later in life just how strategic she was.

She kept all our packing boxes in the basement – labeled, stacked, and ready for the next move.

She had a system.
She anticipated the change before it came.
She wasn’t reacting at the last minute – she was preparing, planning, and leading our family through transition with grace and clarity.

That left a mark on me.

And now, as a coach and HR leader, I see how many of us are moving constantly – new roles, new demands, new fires to put out – but we’re doing it without the labeled boxes.

We’re reacting to life instead of preparing for what we want it to be.

The truth is: you don’t need more hours in the day.
You need more clarity about how you’re using them.

Awareness, Alignment, Action: My 3-Part Framework for HR Intentional Growth

If you feel like you’ve been spinning your wheels lately, use this simple framework:

1. Awareness – What’s really running the show?

Get honest about where your time, energy, and focus are going.
Are you moving with intention – or just keeping up with the noise?

2. Alignment – What do you actually want?

This is where a coach can challenge you to uncover your values, strengths, blind spots, and goals – and use them as a compass to guide your next steps.

3. Action – What’s your next best move?

You don’t need a five-year plan to move forward. You just need one intentional step, done consistently.
It’s about moving from “someday” thinking to “starting now.”
